I don’t think anyone is arguing that a busted hog or doom is fun to play against, but the problem is not necessarily these two characters. I think both have critical design flaws that make them particular frustrating to play against in their current state, but that isn’t the true crux of the issue.
I thought to myself initially: Why Blizzard? Why deliberately make doomfist meta when supports are already so weak? Why force a hog meta when he’s so unfun to play against?
Well it’s more than Blizzard not understanding their own game. They’re deliberately making meta picks the most simple tanks to learn. Doom was an incredibly high skill character based around baiting out enemy cooldowns and movement techs in overwatch one. Now he’s a three second cooldown punchbot with simplified movement abilities and a ridiculous amount of passive sustain.
Anyone can pick him up now. And everyone is. Tank queues are worse than they’ve ever been. Tank queues in overwatch two are worse than dps queues ever were in overwatch one.
So what’s the solution then? Is it to buff tanks that the community perceives as ‘high skill’ or ‘fair’? Well that’s what I initially thought could solve the problem.
However look at the meta before the most recent patches. Zarya was meta (still alongside hog) and people were still complaining. Rightfully so, she was certainly too strong, but not stronger than hog was or doom is now. Blizzard nerfed her and she’s drifted back into irrelevance.
Even these characters like Zarya which the community associates with team play have been dumbed down in overwatch two. Zarya mains rarely use their friendly bubble because there’s no reason to now. Zarya needed team play to get high charge in overwatch one, but now there’s little to no team play required.
So if not Hog or Zar or Doom, then who?
Dive metas will never again feel good in overwatch two because supports are weaker than they’ve ever been, and are receiving less peel than they ever have. As much as we like Winston, Dva, Ball and Doom, in any meta where they’re good, support will be next to unplayable.
Tanks that used to heavily rely on team play like rein and Zarya are always either going to be hard meta due to their stats or be next to irrelevant now. They’ll either be statistically good enough to force on every map, or they’ll be unpicked (Because Rein and Zarya are just weak picks if they’re not able to cover each other’s weaknesses)
Forcing the tank role to have the stats and responsibilities of two ow1 tanks is resulting in every meta becoming one-dimensional and stale within its initial weeks. It feels like there’s a statistically superior raid boss in the server (because there is now) and supports just have to stand in the backline and take whatever comes their way.
Not only are supports statistically inferior to tanks in nearly every way now, but they do not have friendly tanks for peel. After all, overwatch favors the aggressors, and if your sole tank is hanging in your backline for most of your game, you’re not winning the game.
This game’s direction is not sustainable. We have a large audience at the moment because of the sequel’s spectacle, but the game has lost so much strategic depth and gained so much more to complain about (especially if you’re a support main)
I know I probably sound like a frustrated support main right now, which is funny, because I’m actually a tank main who knows all too well how weak supports are in overwatch two.
This is not an issue that can be solved with game balance. This is an issue that will eventually kill the game because when the spectacle wears off, there still needs to be a fun balanced game under the surface, and right now there isn’t. Overwatch two needs to be a strategically deep game that rewards team play and character mastery.
However, it’s currently going in the opposite direction. Not only because of game balance, but because of changes to the entire format of the game.
The community will eventually realize that every new meta will feel bad to play against when there is only one tank in the game. It makes the game far too simple, it makes tank unfun, it makes support unplayable and it’s going to kill the life cycle of the game if nothing changes.
TLDR: 5v5 role queue is the route of all evil
