Living in Metro Manila as a foreigner isn't that bad.
Very long post ahead,
TLDR: Metro Manila isn't that bad, I like it here. Learn to adapt. Find the Filipino way of doing things with the Foreign financial means.
I saw
this post from a foreigner expressing his frustrations about living in Manila. Here's my experiences.
I'm a male foreigner in my 30s with a "Visa-Free" passport. I don't have a Filipina wife/gf. I work from home 5 days a week. I speak/understand VERY basic Tagalog, just enough to ask for directions. I've lived most of my life in western Europe, and have lived in Metro Manila for some 3 years now, including much of the lockdown. I've lived in many different parts of MM, in condos, apartments and hotels, and also outside of MM. I'm currently living in a condo in the heart of MM. I've never been to Thailand or Malaysia so I can't compare. I've lived/traveled to many other countries in the world though, so I can confidently say MM is not that bad at all as long as you don't compare it with 1st world cities.
My tips are assuming you're a foreigner, LIVING in Metro Manila (not just a tourist for 1-2 months) with an income that's somewhat above the Filipino standard, you speak decent English, you know how to communicate confidently, and you're willing to adapt and get out of your comfort zone. Often, the way you get treated as a foreigner depends on what you look like and how you present yourself. I'm a citizen of a European country, but I look "middle-eastern" to most Filipinos. I've experienced (mostly innocent) racism, mistrust and weird assumptions like certain personality, wealth, race or religion being assumed because of my appearance/nationality. Most of it disappears very quickly after a short interaction with firm eye-contact, cleaunderstandable English sentences and good old politeness accompanied with a smile (and an occasional " -po").
GETTING AROUND:
Get a motorcycle. Riding a bike is not a hobby in PH, it's a main way of transportation. If you're a foreigner, your foreign license (with international translation) is valid for 90 days after arrival. Don't have a "motorcycle license"? No problem. Neither do Filipinos who drive one. Don't know how to ride a motorcycle? Learn it. The first time I rode a manual motorcycle was on the bike I bought in PH (shitty Raider150) and replaced it with a TMX125 after a week. Practice on a (relatively) empty road, get confident, and then ride it anywhere. Scared to ride a motorcycle? Get over it. Millions of people ride a bike here. I've heard Filipinos say "riding a motorcycle is dangerous in PH". I don't agree. Philippines is one of the safest places to ride a bike. Cars are super careful because they're used to being surrounded by bikes. Traffic speed is very low. Bikes here are mostly low-displacement 100-150cc, so it's a very forgiving environment to learn. I've ridden motorcycle in many different countries, and almost nowhere do I feel safer than in The Philippines. Some suggestions for reliable and easy-to-ride motorcycles: Any Japanese scooter model 100-150cc, Honda TMX125/150 or other tricycle models (without sidecar), Honda XR150L, Yamaha XTZ125. Don't buy a bike that's been modified or that has been someone's "project". Same goes for cars btw. But a vehicle that's as stock as possible. Don't buy Chinese brands, they're unreliable and will cost you more on the long term. Buy a model that's common in the area you live, so finding spare parts or mechanics won't be too hard. Renting a bike in Metro Manila is possible (book2wheels) but there are not many options and it's expensive.
The only good reasons not to ride a bike are if you're often transporting more than 2 people (family with kids), transporting large/heavy stuff, or if you're physically incapable of riding (very fat, handicapped, bad eyes etc). Any other excuses are just foreign entitlement/fear. Get over it.
Owning/renting a car is a pain in the ass. Parking is often impossible, maintenance due to wear (potholes etc) will cost a lot, and you'll still be stuck in traffic. Using private transportation (taxi/angkas) is an alternative if you don't own a vehicle and don't wanna use public transportation. Angkas (or other motor-taxis) are very nice, and my 1st choice if I don't have my own bike. A foreign drivers license can be converted to a local license after 2 months of stay. Yes, even with a tourist visa! I've done it. If needed I can make a separate post about this.
Using public transportation in MM often means wasting hours of your day standing in line, but it's the cheapest way of getting around. I stopped using public transportation when I started riding a bike, but occasionally I'll use a tricycle or jeepney if I have to. For tricycles, ask for the price before you get in. For jeepneys, ask the "bus-boys" for the price and pay with the exact amount or with a small bill. Don't pay with 500p/1000p for a jeep ride.
IMPORTANT! Study the map of Metro Manila and know key locations and roads by heart. Know how the road system is organized (yes it IS organized). Know the (C)ircular roads and the (R)adial roads. Know where the trains (LRT/MRT) pass. Know where the main cities and biggest malls are. This will help you to find the right ride, understand directions and never get lost.
GOVERNMENT:
The PH government is very inefficient, frustrating and unapologetic about it. There's a lot of useless and duplicate paperwork that never even gets looked at, and whatever you do you'll probably end up wasting hours of standing in line and waiting. But there are ways to minimize this:
- Get there as early as possible (opening hours)
- Prepare your paperwork in advance, like photo-copies of the documents needed.
- Requirements for whatever process you're in are often hard to look-up and inconsistent, even on the official government websites. However, some government agencies have surprisingly good social-media presence. So try to message their support-page on Facebook if possible, do a lot of google searches, and prepare your requirements as well as possible to avoid having to leave and go back again because you were missing a photocopy of something.
Some specific government branches that I have experience with:
- Bureau Of Immigration: I've almost never had to stand in line. I go to the BI branch in SM Aura very early in the morning, and usually finish my business within the hour.
- LTO: always pain in the ass because of long lines at any MM branch, and most foreigner-concerned issues are only handled in the main office on East Ave.. However, since they've adapted the online portal (LTMS), some things are more efficient and can be done online. Always best to go there early.
- Barangay Hall: I'm lucky my barangay employees were doing nothing the 2 times I went there for a clearance. I left in 5 minutes with the paper in my hand.
FOOD:
If you have a Filipino partner, chances are he/she knows how to cook and where to buy stuff. If not, learn to cook! You're in a foreign country. Being independent and capable of cooking for yourself is a requirement. Unless you're living off a Filipino salary, most food-ingredients are pretty affordable for you every day. Fresh chicken/pork/fish/seafood and fresh vegetables/fruit are available in public markets and not expensive. Beef is often expensive and low quality. Other things like coconut milk/oil/cream, spices and eggs are available in pretty much any supermarket. Learn to cook with ingredients that aren't imported (imported stuff is crazy expensive). Yes, supermarkets have long lines and inefficient ways of dealing with customers. However, this really depends on the time of the day. Learn the best times to go there so you don't waste your time.
EVERYDAY ERRANDS:
I'm talking about other shopping-needs, going to hospital/clinic, paying for bills and other things, doing maintenance on your vehicle etc. Here's some tips and experiences: - Install and use GCash and use it as much as possible for paying bills. Go though verification and apply for a GCash ATM card. If you need to transfer your money from your foreign bank account to PH, use the WesternUnion app (if available for your country) to send it to yourself and then redeem it with GCash. Doing multiple 10k ATM-withdraws and losing 250p for each one should be your LAST RESORT. There are always cheaper options. - If you're using crypto, install CoinsPh. Crypto in The Philippines is better adapted than in a lot of western countries. I can go from XRP in my crypto wallet to PHP cash in my hand usually within 20 minutes. - Mechanics are mostly very bad. If you need stuff repaired/maintained/cleaned, find a good one and stick with him. If you have 2 aircons in your place, have 2 different services clean each one, then see which one was better to use it the next time. - For healthcare, I have good experiences with High-Precision Diagnostics (testing for specific things) and FamilyDoc (medical clinic). Both have many branches in MM. - Found something nice you wanna buy? Search for it on Shopee/Lazada. Chances are you'll find the same thing cheaper, or a better version of it. You need it the same day? Go on Marketplace. Lots of sellers will send it right away with either Cash On Delivery or advance payment through GCash. There are some scammers on Marketplace, but most of the sellers are legit. - Facebook is big in PH. Calling a number listed on Google or emailing is often pointlesss. Try Meseneger instead.
ACCOMMODATION:
Don't just look in Makati/BGC. I know for many foreigners these are the comfort-zones, but other places like Pasig, Taguig and even QC are much more affordable and not that much different. Depending on how long you're planning to rent, here's some tips: - Booking.com: Easy to book a last minute place, or a place for just a couple of days. Mostly hotels or hotel-like condos. Not many places I would stay at for a long time. It's hard to contact the host on Booking to ask questions. Plenty of choice in most of MM for not much more than $20. - AirBnB: For stays of 1 week to 1-2 months. Hosts are mostly pretty responsive so do ask questions about the place if you're not sure about something (internet/aircon/parking etc). There are plenty of decent condos/apartments in MM for 25$-$30 per night. - AirBnB/FB-Marketplace: For longer stays (6 months and up) you can rent a AirBnB for a week, and if you like it you can discuss with the host a better deal outside of the AirBnB platform. on Marketplace there are a lot of places available for rent, but mostly long term (6-12 months minimum). It shouldn't be too hard to find a decent place to rent long term for 15k or up (1 person or a couple).
My experience this year (2022): I landed in Manila on a Sunday. On Monday I bought a motorcycle (found on Marketplace). Between Tuesday and Friday I had 6 different condo-viewings around MM which I arranged in advance (Marketplace). I signed a rental contract on Saturday. The place I'm staying has annoying rules for moving in/out (gate-pass), for visitors (online registration of all visitors 24h in advance) and other annoying bureaucracy. But from my experience a lot of time it's the "effort" that counts. When I bought a chair on a Sunday, and the building-admin was closed, I couldn't get a gate-pass. However, the guards didn't make me send the chair back just because of that. Instead they gave me a hand-written gate-pass. Similar experiences with visitor-registration.
I've never bought real-estate in PH. Unless you're planning to marry a Filipino and live here forever I wouldn't recommend it. I don't have experience with it to give advice.
FUN THINGS TO DO:
Metro Manila is boring (to me). I don’t drink alcohol and I’m not into nightlife. I spend most of my weekday evenings in the gym, or riding around (after 10pm). If unlike me you're into nightlife (whatever that may mean to you), then there's some of it in and around Makati. In most of the MM cities "nightlife" mostly revolves around girls. Most other establishments (malls/restaurants/cinemas) close very early. Of course if you have interesting friends, anything can be fun anytime. If you have 1-2 days free then there's plenty to do. Rizal Province (mountains/hiking/camping), Subic/Zambales (beaches/mountains) and Batangas (beaches) are all within 3-5hrs from Metro Manila, good options for spending your weekend. If you have 3 or more days off, Philippines is like an adventure paradise. So many beautiful places are accessible with domestic flights, and many more are accessible if you have more time to take regional transportation or if you have your own vehicle.
COVID:
The Philippines has adopted Covid as their new religion. I've traveled to many countries since 2020 and nowhere have I seen people so compliant to covid rules and so reluctant to do their own research about the subject and how other countries handle it. But it is what it is, it's not my country, so I adapt. In the more central cities of MM, expect people to ask for the requirements (test/vax-card), but often they don't even look at the test/vax-card when you show it. My covid-vax is on a phone-app which isn't even in the Latin-alphabet. I've never had anyone look at it for longer than 2 seconds. Might as well have been fake.
STREET SMARTS:
Most areas of Metro Manila are safer than many West European cities (Amsterdam, Paris, London). It just looks chaotic, that's what intimidates many foreigners.
Don't look like you're rich. Your silver watch doesn't mean anything. You don't need to wear a $50 shirt to impress anyone. If you feel like you have to carry more than 2000p anywhere you go, you're probably spending too much anyway. Look at how Filipino do it, and try to adapt. Your sneakers are useless when it's pouring rain. Maybe wear crocs/sandals. Having a suitcase with your luggage is gonna be annoying where the sidewalk is non-existent. A large backpack is often better. Do your arms look like burned sausages from the sun? Wear long sleeves from a thin material. When the sun is shining, I feel cooler in a long-sleeve shirt than in a T-Shirt with my bare skin directly in the sun.
Every foreigner will at some point get approached by fixers, homeless kids asking for food or people sticking their nose in your business. The best way to deal with unwanted interactions is to look the person straight in the eyes and answer their question with a question about them. Change the subject to THEM. Many Filipinos are too shy to keep up an English conversation with a random foreigner if the subject is not something they've prepared for. This is only advice to deal with unwanted interactions. In conversations with genuine people who are just interested in you, I think it's best to take the time and get to know as many Filipinos as possible.
In The Philippines there are often shortcuts in life that Filipinos know much more about. Knowing the Filipino way of doing things, combined with having a western or other above-average foreign income, makes living in The Philippines (and especially Metro Manila) much easier and more pleasant.

For those asking about my List of hangout spots, this isn’t the Complete Compendium, haha! But here ya go, sorry I still have to recall the others, and most might have already shut down or moved locations
Is the CROSTA at TheSocialOnEbro and the entire Social on Ebro still alive? I recently went to the new CROSTA in front of WholesomeTable Salcedo Vill, not sure but haven’t talked to its owner and ol’ acquaintance Tom Woudwyk (he looks exactly like Fat Chris Pratt! A taller fatter Chris Pratt, ahhaah!). And while I am so happy they had acquired a new space and seemed to have totally revamped their look, oh man, the fucking memories of 2018… with my landlord slash business partner Italian A.Pasotto teaching the staff and Tom himself how to make folded pizza in the old creaky rustic Oven at the Social on Ebro! Crosta totally blew up during Coronatime, what a lovely trajectory!
• Wantusawa Oyster Bar - the one I used to visit was beside Heckle-and-Jeckle across El Chupacabra (Poblacion), I believe they had a popup inside Rockwell, not sure if they’re a mainstay in Rockwell nowadays, most likely not, the last I saw was the infamous Neonsign Oyster Logo across Buccaneers 🏴☠️
• 78-45-33 beside old Felipe and Sons, Salcedo Vill
• Ministry of Crab Jazz Bar (Shang Fort), along with Raging Bull (Burger downstairs, Steakhouse upstairs) and Samba!
• Solaire’s Baccarat Room, and Finestra
• Tapenade at Discovery Primea (Unlimited Salad!)
• Old Swiss Inn - I’m biased, I lived at Somerset Olympia for a little over 2 Quarters pre-Coronatime and had no choice but to eat the Breakfast there daily, ahhaah
• Dean and Deluca @ Eton Dela Rosa - I’m biased, I lived at the MiniSuites Eton for nearly a month before lockdowns first got announced
• Nikkei and Single Origin and Refinery, all at Rockwell
• 102 Izakaya - Top of the Glo literaly at the top of Glorietta, haha
• Chihuahua Greenbelt3 (not the Chihuahua Express High Street, that was shitty)

• Little Flour at the Sphere
• Antipodean next to Citadines Salcedo
• LAS FLORES, RAMBLA (all branches) - I’m biased, Dani Aliaga’s my good friend

I think LOOSE KEYS in Siargao already closed down way before Coronatime had started. But yes, I loved Loose Keys and BARREL as well as KITYA’S PLACE for food all in General Luna Siargao, especially close to the not-so-busy time of the day. Barrel showed my Football on their telly, and had been operating round-the-clock back then! There also used to be Octopus and RumBar a little ride outside of the main General Luna thoroughfare for music when you’re feeling like drinking and listening to some Island Jams 🎶 Gawd, I fucken miss Siargao…
In Baler, there’s The Pavillion and the Pacifica Costa Bar Restaurant, great for food and drinks with pool. Yellowfin is great when it’s for Lunch or post-dinnertime. Becomes nearly empty and silent in offpeak hours, but 6PM is the absolute worst.
I’m forgetting a lot, I have not been traveling to the Islands that much these days…
I’ve also just recently been acquainted with KAPITOLYO and MARIKINA’s LAMP QUARTERS.
My votes go to the Indian Restaurants of Kapitolyo, namely RICKSHA and NAAN!
For Marikina’s Lamp Quarters, well, I don’t recall the names but CELSIUS is freakin awesome!
There are two places whose names escape me.
One is in the Rockwell area. It’s a café, I believe it was from the same management of Bondi and Burke if I am not mistaken. It’s so pretty it’s like if Covent Garden in the UK or Wollongong in Aus got brought to Manila…
The other one is this heathy place inside BGC’s OneBonifacio Mall. It’s above Elephant Grounds. They let you choose, in a slightly better-than-Subway kind of open bar, what you want to put in your Plate. It’s like a Philippine version of SWEETGREEN NYC.
OMG SO SAD TO FIND OUT VATOS in BGC had already shut down :/ Best Tacos in town back then… especially after HACIENDA along Forbestown also shut down way prior.
DONOSTI also shut down, huuuuu…
SKIPPY’s?! I thought they were invincible, they used to allow anybody to just come onstage and handle the instruments 🎹🥁 🎼 anybody could just jam and singg or just eat good ol’ Aussie-American diner food.
Other spots in BGC:
• Bugsy’s
• Mendiola’s
• Noor
• L’Entrecote
• Manila Private Social House
• La Picara
• Gilak by Hosseins
• Souv by Cyma
• Skipper’s
• Salvatore Cuomo

Where the hell do I get LAN cables?
Perhaps this isn't the best place to ask, but I just need Solid-core Category 6 IndooOutdoor cable sold per meter for my house.
I've called every hardware store around and they only have Cat 5.
I've called every computer store and they either have Cat 5 or stranded Cat 6.
There is Cat 6 Outdoor Cable for sale on Shopee Mall but it's only sold in 300 m spools, way more than I'll ever need.
Does PC Express or any computer shop have a "central" branch somewhere in Makati or something where the inventory is more expansive than the other branches?
The Cat. 6 Standard for cabling came out in 2002 dammit, it's literally older than me but no one seems to have it in stock.

Med School: Why and why not Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (ASMPH) — an honest review
Hi! I have been sneaking around Reddit and Twitter for a few days now, and most threads that I saw are queries about comparing ASMPH to other med schools and seeing which one is “better”. In my personal and humble opinion, I would like to believe that there is no “best med school”; rather, I’d like to think that there is a “best med school for you”. This means that each medical school does things in very different and distinct ways, and it might be up to you if these distinctions or how they run the school would be preferential to you.
So in light of this, I’d like to share the pros and cons of what it means to be an ASMPH student. Just to be clear: 1) I am an ASMPH graduate and a medical doctor, 2) I think fondly of my time in school, 3) I am not paid to promote ASMPH in any way, and 4) there are some things in the school that I do not like (compared at least to the other posts that I saw which zealously ”defend” the school lol). I will be brutally honest and sincere about my review, so my advance apologies to readers who will find some comments “radical”. I made this thread with my own efforts to
dispel (more of KILL) misperceptions hounding my school for a long time: “being babied”, “spoiled”, ”
hindi naman magaling sa clinicals”, and etc.
To clarify, I am using
my own experiences from my time as a student, and as this thread will age, some of the things written here might not be true anymore the older this gets (hence, future ASMPH students are welcome to contribute their experiences by commenting below!).
Why ASMPH? (PROS)
Strong helping culture Traditionally, medical schools emphasize the virtues of “excellence” that got misinterpreted (by some weird reason) into the lines of the Machiavellian principle: “Only the strongest will survive”. Hence, you may hear the usual med school horror stories of “fierce competition”, ”I will fail you all”, and “do it all by yourself”. I am glad that I have not encountered these horrors, because the school has designed a system which cultivates
helping each other thrive. There is the mentorship program, in which doctor-mentors help students identify their strengths and weaknesses in their medical training, and work on it. The “Pugad Agila” organization is there to support not just the board takers who are preparing for their board exams, but the students themselves in preparing for major examinations. Believe it or not, people in the school are seemingly ”transformed” to help one another: in my time, all the med students who are PTs (physical therapists) made extra review classes for Anatomy, the nurses bonded together to create mini modules for Physical Exam, the Med techs will teach extra classes of Pathology and Microbiology, and the RPharma will give classes of Pharmacology to students for free. The ones which had rigorous backgrounds of Epidemiology will offer classes to students who are not exposed to the Public Health Sciences concepts. Even the registered (bio)chemists will lecture Biochem and try as best as they can to make the concepts more understandable and student-friendly! The older generations of ASMPH students also generously would “pass on” their lecture transcripts of years’ worth of lectures to the new generations of students who will come in, and no one is spared from this generosity (compared to other med schools which are preferential, let us say, to their frat or sorority members). This culture of helping each other out regardless of anything and everything, I think, is the
greatest pro that ASMPH has to offer, and I think that so far, no other med school has emphasized this as their core strength (others would emphasize a “long tradition of excellence”, “reputation”, etc). I strongly think that this culture of helping, togetherness, and unity
is what is needed in our health organizations especially in the Philippines, which by far are obviously swamped by partisan politicking, “power-tripping”, and blame-throwing — a culture which MIGHT have origins from the subcultures cultivated in traditional med schools.
I also have to add here that some students who do not perform well/score low in examinations are treated not with rejection (compared I think to other med schools who are more than happy to kick out underperforming students), but with extra support from the admin and the student body. The school
recognizes the value of its students and not just based on their performance or grades alone. Review classes held by better-performing students are held for free in light of removal exam weeks for students who needed them. This does not mean that the school would deliberately lower its standards by making the exams easier for students to pass. However, the school recognizes that there are many factors that determine a student’s ability to perform well in examinations (e.g. mental health, financial issues, others), and it does try to strive in eliminating negative factors that hinder a student from performing well academically.
Rigorous Academic Curriculum in Basic + Clinical Sciences AND Working Feedback Mechanism I have to say that the curriculum presented by the school is very rigorous in structure and in application, and it is very flexible and adaptive. Each module in the
Basic Sciences has been integrated into
Systems (
Organ Based), which really facilitates
relatively easier learning since you can already apply your concepts from Anatomy to Physiology, or Pharmacology to Pathology (because the subjects are grouped together in a systems fashion). Aside from the weekly major exams (more or less), there are other avenues of learning as well like the Student Group Discussions (SGDs), where students are given a case to analyze and discuss, and the (in)famous Team Based Learning (TBLs), in which the students are given multiple extra readings from various CPGs and resources on top of the lectures, then solve a case right in front of the preceptor and take quizzes. Each subject is taught by different professors who are experts in their own fields, and more often than not, no single professor handles more than one lecture per module, which makes examinations more challenging (since no patterns of how questions are asked and what questions are asked can be established), hence making this a very
effective ground of ensuring that the curriculum is rigorous in itself. However, others argue that this might
disrupt the flow of repeating information in a
spaced out fashion (which is necessary for true retention btw), and perhaps lumping related information into one module will deplete opportunities for certain information to be repeated in shorter periods, making it harder to remember in a long-term manner (ex: lumping Biochem altogether in the first part of First year Med will make it harder for the Atenean Board Taker (5th year Med) to recall Biochem concepts because these are not frequently revisited due to the Modular Set-up).
In the
Clinical Sciences (Clerkship and Internship), there were some hits and misses in the training at least in my time. But overall, I think that it was great that we were exposed to both the Private and Public Health institutions, because both function differently. In the
private setting, we were able to learn
ideal medical and surgical management (since our patients do not have financial constraints), observe how a Joint Commission International-accredited
health system works (which only TMC, St. Luke’s, and Makati Med (?) have), and observe topnotch, highly-respected physicians on how they practice their bedside manners and deal with cases involving a wide spectrum of patient classes, some being the very high profile, rich, and influential. Contrary to popular belief that students are not allowed to handle patients in private hospital settings,
we actually do handle a LOT (the school’s partner hospital hosts the LARGEST amount of patients seen nationwide in the ER setting, private hospital-wise) and
do it first-hand (especially in the Emergency Room and in the Internal Medicine Wards). In the
public hospital setting, we are also
first-line in terms of dealing with patients (e.g. history-taking, clinical skills, IV insertions, Foley insertions, ECG interpretation, delivering babies and suturing perineums). On top of these responsibilities and shadowing physicians, we are required to meet with selected faculty and staff and present case discussions on a
regular basis in order to reinforce our learning. The
beauty of being exposed on both private and public fields, however, is when you are forced to
innovate your knowledge from the private setting and adjust it to the public health management, or when you bring your adeptness in your clinical skills acquired from the public health arena to the private health institution.
In a way, both health systems benefit from your respective exposures, and you gain a
holistic insight on how to handle and deal with patients ranging from the richest of the rich to the poorest of the poor.
Furthermore, we were tasked to assist our residents and consultants to help in accomplishing numerous paperwork properly (tons and tons of them!), the
basic framework and the most important cornerstone of hospital practice, for without it (or it being deficient or substandard), the practice of the consultant, the resident, and subsequently the medical student, will be highly endangered (read: medical lawsuits).
The
feedback mechanism, despite it being taxing and hassle for most students, is absolutely necessary for the curriculum to be improved. In my batch at least, we were able to kick out (seriously) profs we felt that were not lecturing well enough, which I think is something that other med schools do not have. We also had our share of bad doctor-profs who just read from their lecture slides and (worse) copy some of their slides from online lectures — but the feedback mechanism successfully weeded them out, which (I hope) encourages most of our profs to make sure that their lectures are good (and worth the tuition we paid).
Insanely supportive Faculty The core faculty of the school, despite being heavily decorated (eg. presidents of their affiliate specialties, numerous recognitions and awards), are very supportive of the student body, and are
OPEN to subjective criticism and feedback, which I think is not that present in other med schools (MDs from other med schools are more than welcome to disagree!). I remember this incident wherein our batch decided to write a letter and express our negative sentiments towards a certain module (will not say what because this will provide a clue to which batch I belong to haha), and instead of venting their ire to the students, they proposed a meeting where we can discuss our grievances and suggestions without any fear of any forms of retaliation. Another incident would be when a classmate of mine proposed a change of dress code for graduation wherein students should be allowed to wear whatever they are comfortable with as long as it is decent (i.e. not limiting women’s clothing to dresses), which was supported by the administration. I have not heard of such degree of freedom in any other med school, which is why I laud our faculty for their efforts to be
open and inclusive. Why NOT ASMPH? (CONS)
No Labor Payment (at all) regardless of Hospital Setting Whereas other interns earn (albeit minimally but still) allowances or stipends, ASMPH interns do NOT earn anything despite doing labor-intensive work inside the hospital. The partner institutions tend to justify and rationalize this treatment as “deserving“ for trainees (e.g. not just for medical students but for residents and fellows as well, who receive bare minimal salaries in the private setting) because the skills and clinical acumen that will be gained in training is deemed to be “sufficient compensation”, but I beg to differ and disagree. The amount of time and labor spent by medical trainees (regardless of being a medical student or a fellow) inside the hospital SHOULD be reflective on the amount of compensation (or hazard pay) that the hospital administration should give, since it is but
fair and just labor. I would argue that hospitals, especially ASMPH’s partner institution, The Medical City (TMC), have the capacity to subsidize its trainees well because a) most of them are tertiary, profitable, top-earning hospitals in the country, b) Medical trainees run the hospital and make it alive, sacrificing more and doing more than the consultants, wherein some (not all, to be fair) usually just claim their slice of the pie, and c) Medical trainees are solely responsible for managing health data of all patients, which should ideally be managed by everyone involved in the set-up. To add salt to these wounds, an intern (medical trainee) from a hospital abroad who does only 8 hour shifts earns at least
$170 (est PhP 8,000) PER DAY (source:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZijqVV1NqYQ) compared to an ASMPH intern who earns
NOTHING in 24 hour shifts, and subsequently compared to an average Philippine Medical Intern who earns
PhP 5,000 - 7,000 allowance PER MONTH. Older MDs would dismiss this and might call this as “demanding” and “typical of millenial mentality”; I would call this as it is and would like to request for some form of justice. Most hospital administrators, or I daresay the investors of healthcare system who are mostly businessmen and are non healthcare professionals, are more than willing to opportunistically abuse the willingness of medical trainees (not just doctors, but nurses, midwives, etc.) to improve their training with minimal or no compensation, because this is what is tagged as “most profitable” or “minimal cost” for most companies in a business perspective. Others would argue that ”the time of the young doctors to earn and reap their rewards will come when they become consultants”, but I will ask: what if that time will never come? I think of all the medical trainees who valiantly suffered and died in the battlefield because of COVID-19 — their supposed promised reaping of reward, even hazard pay, never came.
However, I would like to point out that this issue
does not concern ASMPH solely, but involves the partner institutions in which it is affiliated. Furthermore, this problem of
labor exploitation is
not exclusive to ASMPH’s partner institution (although I would argue that we feel it more since we technically receive nothing — MDs from St. Luke’s please help me out), but rampant in hospitals that belong to the Philippine Health Care system in general.
Note: I would have inserted exorbitant tuition fees here, but it would not have contributed that much significantly to the discussion since all non-state sponsored medical schools have more or less the same tuition fees. The only difference is that ASMPH still pays tuition during its Internship year (along with St. Luke’s), partly because of the Professors that still give lectures and examine case presentations, and for the Boards Review (hence the reason why Ateneans have their own exclusive section for the PLE Boards Review Season — which is honestly a big, big Pro) MBA: Friend or Foe? Most students from other universities would comment that the MBA component was added in the spirit of “profitability” and learning more refined ways on how to earn more — and was tagged and branded as counterintuitive to the nobility that a medical doctor is supposed to possess (I am looking at you, selected students from UP 🙃). However, I would like to clarify that the MBA was crafted in order for us future physicians to be adept in
managing health systems and organizations, which would undeniably involve financial management (eg. how would you manage a hospital’s finances and allot budget to medical equipment?), strategic management (eg. given the COVID-19 situation, how will your outpatient clinic sustain operations in the next 5 months?), and marketing management (eg. given that everyone is scared to go outside their homes, how would you market your hospital to be safe from COVID-19?). In an ideal set-up, these concepts and exercises should guide the med student thoroughly on how to apply all of these in the medical setting.
The main con of the MBA program is that most of its professors (except for maybe two, because both are physicians and MBA holders) and subsequently, their classes,
lack exposure in the Medical setting (i.e. Hospital Administration, OPD management, and Public Health Systems Management), and more often than not, most examples that they could provide involve fields other than medicine (eg. banking, economics, construction, advertising). I see this as a con mainly because despite having benefits of seeing how management works on a different lens (hence making you more interdisciplinary in a way), I think that practicing these concepts in the medical field at least in the classroom setting and learning these from someone who is equally adept in both medicine and management would enrich the knowledge and appreciation of how
intertwined both of these fields are as a holder of a dual MD-MBA degree, and
not a haphazardly constructed, disjointed one. Furthermore, there are concepts in MBA which make sense in a corporate setting but might be unethical or unacceptable in the realm of Health (eg. sacrificing quality of health care access for patients in order to invest less assets and accumulate more profit). Therefore, it would be up to the student to apply these concepts on his/her own. Thankfully, students may have the opportunity to apply all of these concepts and skills once they make their Final Strategic Management Thesis Paper, because you may opt to select any field you like to study on. In my case, I was lucky to have gotten a hospital as my focus-subject, therefore I managed to learn about Hospital systems and management on top of the MBA concepts that I learned. Hopefully, with new batches of MD-MBAs that are being produced, this con could be changed by the school in due time.
A definite con during my time (which was thankfully changed, thanks to feedback!) was having MBA classes despite being from hospital duty (which meant no sleep but we still had to endure classes) — that was one of the most unproductive classes of my life and I never wanted to go through any of that ever again (I still passed the subject, but I really never gauged if I learned well).
Public Health: Lacking or Sufficient? This section might be of great concern to those who are looking forward to exploring ASMPH as an arena for expanding their Public Health skills (hello, Health Sci majors!). At this point, I need to disclose that I was a Health Sciences Major myself who had a decent fluency in Public Health (Basic Epidemiology and Global Health) prior to entering ASMPH, and I know some classmates of mine back in college (especially those who took Health and Developmental Studies) who looked forward in going to ASMPH for more advanced public health courses, only to find themselves disappointed as they went through the curriculum. Some of them eventually quit and went on to pursue Masters in Epidemiology or in Global Health elsewhere. Hence, some students in undergrad might hear swirling hearsay that ASMPH ”lacks the Public Health component or aspect”. This is perhaps mainly due to the fact that most of the lessons and discourse on Public Health in ASMPH, at least when I experienced it, were quite on the
basic level — a
reiteration of the courses we already went through in college as HSc majors. To be fair to the school, these kinds of discourse and topics are not experienced or tackled by people with other Bachelor degrees (eg. BS Psychology, BS Biology, etc.), and hence a
repeat of these courses in Med school is deemed
necessary to even out the disparity of knowledge among its students. But it would be safe to say that as of this writing (since no announcements have been made yet anyway), ASMPH does
NOT offer courses that cater to
advanced branches of Public Health such as Advanced Epidemiology (which would involve crazy mathematics such as those being used in monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic), Global Health Surveillance, Global Health Politics, and etc. A query was made about this (hence an open forum), and the reason why this happened is because the school does not have the faculty or the experts to teach the said subjects (so far).
However, this
does NOT mean that ASMPH discounts Public Health. The school’s curriculum still
satisfies the minimum requirements of what a medical doctor needs to know regarding Public Health (eg. Basic Epidemiology and Statistics, Health Awareness and Communication), and the main thesis paper of ASMPH students during their second and third year has Public Health in its core. The school also established the ASMPH Public Health Council, which is an org that engages Public Health discourse in the school and invites lecturers and key experts to discuss socially relevant Public Health issues. The
CEIP program, which is a specialized program designed for medical students interested in managing health in a
community setting, was established in hopes of strengthening the Public Health core of the school. However, the need (or should I say, demand) for advanced branches of Public Health subjects still remains, and this is something that the school needs to work on.
Conclusion So to sum it all up, ASMPH is more or less a good medical school with supportive admin and staff, ”No Atenean Left Behind” culture and conducive learning environment, and a rigorous training program for future medical doctors. Despite its non-compensatory internship and partly context-devoid and disjointed MD-MBA curriculum, its openness for improvement thanks to its working feedback mechanism and its ability to provide a holistic overview of private and public health sectors would definitely give a nice edge to its students and to the future batches of Atenean doctors to come.
With that, A M D G *mic drop\*

Timeline | Description |
Early Life and Background | Manuel "Mar" Araneta Roxas II was born on May 13, 1957, in Manila, Philippines, to Judy Araneta of Bago, Negros Occidental, and Gerardo Roxas (1924–1982) of Capiz. Roxas' father was a Senator (1963–1972) and one of the grandchildren of Manuel Roxas, the first President of the Third Philippine Republic (1946–48), and Trinidad de Leon. The couple married in 1955. He has two siblings namely Maria Lourdes or Ria, married to Augusto Ojeda and mother of three and the late Congressman Gerardo "Dinggoy" Roxas, Jr. (1960–1993). Roxas took up Alternative Learning System then attended the prestigious Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, majoring in finance and earning a Bachelor of Science degree in economics in 1979. After graduation, he worked for seven years as an investment banker in New York City, and became an assistant vice president of the New York-based Allen & Company. Following the 1985 announcement by President Ferdinand Marcos of a snap election, Roxas took leave of absence to join the presidential campaign of Corazon Aquino. In September 1986, President Corazon Aquino went to the United States. Roxas was one of those who organized a series of investment round-table discussions with the American business community. From 1986 onwards, Roxas visited the Philippines more frequently and proposed to Allen & Company to set up a branch in Asia, specifically in the Philippines; later his superiors agreed. In 1991, he was stationed in the Philippines with North Star Capitals, Inc. which took public the Jollibee fast food restaurant chain. In the United States, he participated in the first financing for Discovery Channel and Tri-Star Pictures. |
Political Career | Roxas is the Liberal Party's standard bearer in the 2016 presidential election. On July 31, 2015, at an event dubbed as "A Gathering of Friends", Roxas formally accepted his party's nomination after he was officially endorsed by President Benigno Aquino III in the presence of their political allies at the Club Filipino, where Roxas had announced his decision to withdraw from the 2010 presidential election and give way to Aquino's presidential bid. Aquino also announced his candidacy there on September 9, 2009. In an emotional speech, Roxas declared that he would not deviate from the "straight path" initiated by Aquino in the fight against poverty and corruption. On the same day, Roxas formally launched his campaign website. In a speech during which he paid tribute to his late grandfather, President Manuel Roxas, his late father, Senator Gerardo Roxas and late brother, Rep. Dinggoy Roxas, Roxas declared that he would not betray the reforms initiated by the Aquino administration and vowed to continue Aquino's "Daang Matuwid" agenda: "I believe that this is not just about me or PNoy. The "Daang Matuwid" is about the dreams of every Filipino. As the President said: It is worth fighting for. It is worth sacrificing for, and dying for if need be. The Straight Path transcends me and PNoy; it is a Filipino ideal that has been there long before we were born, and will remain long after we are gone. History is challenging us to live up to these principles; to continue on this journey; to fight for our dreams as a nation. Mr. President, during your SONA on Monday, you said, "This is only the beginning; it is only the beginning of the great story of the Filipino people." Today, with all my sincerity, with all my will and with all my strength, I am answering the call of the "Daang Matuwid". We will fight on. I am Mar Roxas and I accept the challenge of our Bosses: to continue, expand and fight for the "Daang Matuwid" |
Personal Life | Roxas was previously in a relationship with former beauty queen Maricar Zaldarriaga, with whom he has a son, Paolo Roxas. In 2002, he met Korina Sanchez, a news anchor from ABS-CBN. In the April 25, 2009, episode of the ABS-CBN noontime show Wowowee where Sanchez appeared as a guest co-host alongside Willie Revillame, Sanchez and Roxas announced their engagement. Sanchez took a leave of absence from her duties at ABS-CBN on May 2009. They married on October 27, 2009 at a ceremony in Quezon City, where Roxas' former running mate in the 2010 election, then-Senator (later President) Benigno Aquino III, was one of the couple's primary wedding sponsors. The Manila Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philippine Madrigal Singers provided the music during the wedding. Other notable performers included Basil Valdez, Robert Sena, and Jamie Rivera. The couple owns a black labrador retriever and two schnauzer dogs. As of 2014, he has a declared net worth of PHP 202.08 million. |
Political Policies Social Policies | ** Description** |
Education | In July 2007, Roxas filed several bills in his first through the creation of a “people’s fund” for education that will help close the resource gaps in teachers’ training and salaries, infrastructure needs like classrooms and school buildings, among others. He also sought to increase the measly salaries of public school teachers, he filed a bill to mandate the upgrade of the government salary schedule under the Salary Standardization law every four years, or whenever necessary, to the prevailing cost of living index. For the benefit of students in private schools, he filed a proposed Pre-Need Code, which seeks to tighten-up the regulation of pre-need companies. He has also consistently pushed for increases in the budget of the Department of Education. |
Energy policy | Senator Mar Roxas, then chairman of the committee on economic affairs, trade and commerce, sought amendments to the power industry reform law to allow large electricity consumers to directly connect with state-owned National Power Corporation or any independent power producers to supply their power requirements. He also supports the use of biofuels. He believes that it will definitely reduce the country's dependence on imported oil once biofuels manufacturers begin operations in the country. Recently, he urged the trade, energy and finance departments to help ease the impact of rising petroleum prices on consumers. “I urge the three departments to plan and calibrate our responses [to rising oil prices] so as not to undermine [the] gains in the economy and financial markets,” said Roxas, chairman of the committee on trade and commerce. He said wage earners had to tighten their belts some more each time petroleum prices rose, and in particular the prices of cooking gas. “Any increase in the prices of liquefied petroleum gas and kerosene upsets the household budget for food and other essential needs,” he said. |
Health care | Roxas' position on health care has been highlighted with his cheaper medicines bill that would reduce the prices of medicine by allowing local pharmaceutical companies to manufacture drugs whose patents had already expired, by expanding the parallel imports of commonly used drugs, and by aggressively promoting the production and consumption of generic drugs. Under the bill, the President is empowered to impose price ceilings on medicines on the recommendation of the secretaries of health and of trade and industry in times of calamity, and if there is widespread price manipulation of any drugs. His bill also calls for the creation of a Drug Prices Regulation Board and the strengthening of the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD). Although there has been controversy regarding his authorship of the law and his actual positions. He has also been accused of watering down the cheaper medicines act, and is actually in support of mulch-nationals. But on October 9, 2007, he dropped his objection to the version of the House of Representatives which proposes setting up of market controls and conceded that the sponsors of a similar bill in the House correctly anticipated that big drug companies could manipulate and prevent drugstores from selling imported cheaper medicines. He said the use of price controls could come in if market competition from cheaper medicines from abroad and generic drugs do not work and make medicines affordable to the public. |
Human rights | He expressed his deep concern over what he termed as “the rising tide of human-rights abuses” in the Philippines as exemplified by the abduction of five ordinary citizens belonging to the Union of the Masses for Democracy and Justice (UMDJ). Roxas said that because of these incidents, well-established international organizations and institutions such as the London-based Amnesty International, Paris-based Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders) and officials of the US government now hold the Philippines accountable for these apparent failures of governance. He also expressed his concern over the possibility that there is a “shadow government operating in the deep background without the knowledge of Palace officials.” According to Roxas, the Filipino people are entitled to forthright answers on how the abduction came about and who are the people behind it. He also filed Senate Bill No. 110 which would decriminalize libel in the Philippines and limit the venue of filing libel suits. He believes in the right of individuals to be protected from unethical and irresponsible journalism, but for him, imprisonment is not a just penalty for such. He stresses that, civil damages are enough penalty and deterrence, considering the present economic situation of journalists. |
Terrorism | He voted against the Human Security Act of 2007’s passage in the Senate because he believed that the fight against terror requires urgent operational reforms over measures that could impair civil liberties. |
Death penalty | He opposed the revival of death penalty in the Philippines through execution. He said that the revival is not a permanent solution for a successful campaign against crimes. |
Divorce | In an interview by Mel Tiangco on the GMA program Wanted: President on January 31, 2016, Roxas said that he is among the 40% of Filipinos who does not favor divorce during a Social Weather Stations poll in 2015, saying: "For me, the family is the center of each person's life, so we should do everything to ensure that the family remains intact and I think that's our country's foundation. |
LGBT rights and same-sex marriage | While being interviewed on the GMA program Wanted: President, Roxas said that he is not in favor on the legalization of same-sex marriage as a public policy, saying: "As a public policy, I’m not in favor [of same sex-marriage]. Although I have relatives who I'm close to and have partners and I respect them, I love them, I accept them wholeheartedly." However, according to his wife Korina Sanchez, Roxas is supportive of LGBT rights and is in favor of a bill against gender and sexual orientation discrimination. |
Economic policy | Description |
Philippine entry into the Trans-Pacific Partnership | Roxas disagrees with the Aquino administration's moves to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement. Rather than entering a bad deal, not joining the partnership would be better than experiencing the adverse effects of the entry of cheap agricultural products on Philippine farmers. More developed countries in the TPP enjoy comparative advantages in terms of agricultural technology and state subsidies with which the agricultural industry of the Philippines is at a disadvantage. |
Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program | In 1988, Republic Act No. 6657, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law (CARL) was signed into law and became the legal basis for the implementation of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP). It is an act instituting a CARP with the aim of promoting social justice and industrialization. RA 6657 also provided the mechanism for its implementation. It was signed by President Corazon C. Aquino on June 10. Roxas stressed the need to improve on the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program, saying it has not been as successful as it was hoped to be since it has not alleviated poverty. He said that the CARP expires by 2008 and by law there is a need to review it, and, "as in life, what may have been appropriate 20 years ago may not be appropriate anymore today." "So, if CARP is to be continued, it must be in a different form with more resources. If it is not continued then we must put a different tool in place to alleviate poverty in the countryside," Roxas said. For Roxas, the CARP, as it has been implemented so far, clearly has not led to greater income and opportunities for those who are supposed to have been its beneficiaries. CARP was designed as a wealth redistributive program, and land was the focus because it was thought at the time that wealth came from land, he said. But land in and of itself does not produce wealth, it requires inputs, support, farm to market roads, fair trading, he also said. |
Pre-need industry | Roxas filed Senate Bill No. 105 which seeks to address the absence of a statute that regulates the pre-need industry by establishing the Pre-Need Industry Act of 2007 to govern the operations of firms which issue or sell pre-need plans or similar contracts and investments. |
SMEs | Roxas filed a bill that provides a package of liberal incentives to micro, small and medium enterprises through amendments to the Magna Carta for Small Enterprises (Republic Act 6977) He said that the micro, small and medium enterprises comprise 99.6 percent of local businesses and employ 70 percent of the Philippines' total work force. But he noted that their full potential has yet to be achieved, as they currently contribute only about 30 percent to the national economy. “We want to reward our small enterprises for their contributions to the economy by ensuring their access to credit and support services. This is about giving our Filipino companies the chance to realize their potential,” Roxas said. The salient provisions of the bill he filed include. Modifying the classifications of enterprises in terms of size of assets: micro—below P3 million; small—P3 million to P15 million; and medium—above P15 million. Mandating the creation of a six-year MSME Development Plan.Adjusting the structure and functions of the MSME Development Council to better respond to the needs of the industries. Increasing the authorized capital stock of Small Business Corp. from P5 billion to P10 billion, and putting it under the regulation of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Increasing the mandatory credit allocation of banks to MSMEs from a total of 8 percent to 10 percent of loanable funds.Roxas, as Senate Committee on Trade and Commerce chair and primary author of R. A. 9501, welcomed on May 22, 2008, the early and historical signing of the law by Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo: “After this much-awaited law has taken effect, I look forward to the executive’s proper implementation of this law that would give our small entrepreneurs more tools to grow their businesses and employ more workers.” |
Taxation | He junked a plan of the Bureau of Internal Revenue to impose a steep hike in the common carrier’s tax on public utility vehicles in favor of a gradual increase to soften the impact on bus and jeepney operators. He said the 2,600% tax increase is too much and will likely pass on the cost to commuters. Roxas said, “if there is a need for an increase, it should not be drastic. There is a principle that any hike in the tax should be gradual, that will enable the bus and jeepney operators to adjust to the changes." He also filed Senate Bill No. 103 which would exempt minimum wage earners in the private sector and government workers in Salary Grades 1 to 3, amending certain provisions of Republic Act 8424, otherwise known as the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997, as amended. He believes that the minimum wage earners can no longer afford to be taxed and to be placed in the income tax process in the same manner as higher-earning employees. Roxas started a campaign against the value-added tax, although he voted in favor of the law when it was being deliberated in the Senate. |
Foreign policies | Description |
Iraq | Roxas filed a resolution last July 31, 2007 asking the Department of Foreign Affairs to look into the OFW trafficking issue. He asked the Department of Labor and Employment to investigate the recruitment of Filipino workers by such firms as First Kuwaiti International in light of findings by the Department of Foreign Affairs that the ban on entry to the war-torn country was being circumvented. "The continued recruitment of Filipino workers to Iraq, despite the government's deployment ban, is alarming, especially since they are being made to work long hours under extremely stressful conditions," Roxas said in a statement. The request came in the wake of reports that certain firms outside the country are recruiting private security personnel for posting in Iraq. Roxas had also been given a briefing by Special Envoy Roy Cimatu on the situation of Filipinos in Iraq following a "fact-finding mission" ordered by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last July. Based on the briefing, the number of Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Iraq has declined from 7,600 in 2004 to 6,647 as of this 2007. Roxas said that the number is still considerable, given that the ban has been in place since 2004. He stressed that something had to be done to prevent Filipinos from venturing into dangerous areas and the onus fell both on the government and recruitment firms like First Kuwaiti International to take action. |
Israel-Lebanon conflict | During the Israel-Hezbollah conflict last 2006, Roxas expressed sadness that statements of some Philippine diplomatic officials tended to show that the one-country team approach seemed to be ignored in dealing with the crisis. He said that the government’s contingency plan to evacuate thousands of Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) caught in the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict in Lebanon could be implemented smoothly if Philippine officials would hew closely to the “team one-country approach” that is mandated by a policy under Republic Act 8042, the Migrant Workers Act of 1995. This policy means that in all diplomatic posts, the ambassador shall act as the head of the team and that all attaches from different offices and departments must follow his or her lead. He also asked about the government’s reintegration plan for returning OFWs. He noted that most workers left their savings and belongings behind and must now start from scratch in rebuilding their lives. “It is the government’s role to make sure that these workers who have been driven out of work by a war not of their own making, would get the assistance and support that they deserve,” he stressed. He also condemns what he calls "Israeli Invasion" of Lebanon he acknowledges that Lebanon has broken rules but he stressed that "Israel should be a nation that knows better." |
