On this day, ten years ago, presidential candidate Mitt Romney was tragically assassinated by former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, mere days before the 2012 election. Let us never forget this solemn reminder of how truly fragile our democracy can be.

How was Barack Obama able to win Florida in the 2008 and 2012 Presidential election but none of the other Democratic Presidential candidates of the past 20 years (Al Gore, John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden) were able to do so?

Florida has received a large amount of news coverage every election cycle due to the fact that election there tend to be very close and for its role in the 2000 election as the state that swung the election for George W. Bush.
How was Barack Obama able to swing the state Democratic despite the fact that the two preceding Democratic candidates (Gore, Kerry) and the two successive candidates (Clinton, Biden) were unable to do so?
Here is a chart of the Florida vote percentages since 2000:
2000 George W. Bush (Republican): 49.847% Al Gore (Democratic): 49.838%.
2004 George W. Bush (Republican Incumbent): 52.10% John Kerry (Democratic): 47.09%.
2008 Barack Obama (Democratic): 50.91% John McCain (Republican): 48.10%.
2012 Barack Obama (Democratic Incumbent): 50.01% Mitt Romney (Republican): 49.13%
2016 Donald Trump (Republican): 49.02% Hillary Clinton (Democratic): 47.82%
2020 Donald Trump (Republican Incumbent): 51.22% Joe Biden (Democratic): 47.86%

Former GOP 2012 presidential candidate dies of Covid-19

Herman Cain had been in the hospital for a month after developing symptoms and difficulty breathing. When he was diagnosed, doctors said they knew it was going to be a tough battle for him- he was 74. He attended the Trump rally in Tulsa on June 20, sans mask. The timing seems just about right IMO.
Here's his tweet at the rally

Politics aside, this is sad news. I'm sorry to hear of another life taken by this virus. Septuagenarians and older folks, take note. Take precautions.

Does anyone else feel that all of the 2012 presidential candidates, for lack of a better word, suck?

Obama has proven himself to be an extremely ineffective leader incapable of rallying the government to do anything, the GOP candidates all seem incredibly unintelligent, some unable to remember what their policies even are, and for every good idea Ron Paul has he follows it up with ten bat-shit crazy policies (at least in my opinion). Are there seriously no better options? I'm not the most politically knowledgeable person in the world, but I try to keep up with current events and for how much I love the ideals of the US, I truly feel after four years with one of these candidates in charge America will be one of the crappiest nations on Earth.

IAMA 2012 GOP Presidential Candidate. I believe in Fair Trade, No Tax Loopholes, No Special Interests, Energy Innovation & Independence. $100 Donation Limit. I am Buddy Roemer. AMA

What I stand for:
I have based my campaign on fighting the corrupting influences that special interests have over our political system. Politicians in Washington, D.C. are completely beholden to special interest groups to fund their political campaigns. It is time that someone stands-up against the power of the big checks, the bundled checks and the corporate checks. This is why I take no PAC Money and have a $100 donation limit.
I believe a good job is the key to freedom and happiness. Yet today we have fewer people working than we did a decade ago and those who do have a job have, on average, not seen their wages increase on pace with the rest of the economy. We need to reinvest in our workforce and rediscover what ‘Made in America’ really means.
Our current tax code is unfair, unreadable and unworkable. The corporate loopholes written into law by the special interests in Washington reward the few at the expense of the many. It costs small business far too much time and money to comply with our current tax regime, while at the same time many large corporations exploit this system and pay little to no federal taxes at all.
A little about me:
I grew up on a farm in Louisiana, graduated from public school.
I went on to receive my undergraduate degree from Harvard College and my M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
I served four terms in the United States Congress from 1981 – 1988 as a conservative Democrat who often broke ranks with his party to vote with President Reagan.
After I was Louisiana’s Governor from 1988-1992 as both a Democrat and Republican.
During my tenure in the Governor’s office, unemployment in the state dropped by approximately half, the state budget was balanced all years despite inheriting a huge deficit.
Most recently, I served as the founder, CEO, and President of Business First Bank, a small business community bank with approximately $650 million in assets that took no bailout money from the federal government.
I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with my beautiful wife Scarlett, and I am the father of three wonderful children.

Why the 2016 GOP race may be more like 2012 than the party hoped "The 2016 Republican presidential contest, designed to be a tidy affair, is instead shaping up to be a chaotic, drawn-out slog, thanks largely to an expanding pool of rich patrons raining money on a broad field of candidates."

Herman Cain, 2012 GOP Presidential Candidate And Businessman, Dies At Age 74

I hope this isn't too obnoxious... ELI5 The 2012 US Presidential Candidates

To be honest, I haven't ever paid attention to politics. I want to, but I really don't know where to start. I'm only 16 (which is no excuse, I understand) and I find it hard to comprehend news pertaining to the upcoming election. I can't just go on CNN and click on Politics because I have no sense of background behind these news.
Moreover, I am clueless as to whether or not what I'm reading or listening to is even credible. Sure, a couple months ago I read a plethora of articles on reddit that depicted Rick Santorum as this crazy rightist-creationist-baptist-whatthefucktist candidate. But, even though I don't support his beliefs, I want to develop my own opinion on the candidates, regardless of how the media/social networks portray them.
So, if you have some time to waste or would just like to help a young redditor out, it would be great if you could just describe the basic attributes of the current general election candidates, Obama and Romney. Just like, their key ideas and what they stand for in terms of popular social reform (i.e. health care, gay marriage, etc.). I could imagine that this is something not easily condensed, but I'm not looking for a Wikipedia excerpt; just a very general summary, I guess.
Edit: Thank you for the responses! I wasn't expecting so much feedback... Anyhow, in case anyone was having the same issue as me (which I'm sure there are), some of these redditors below have introduced a very handy website. I am sure it will help you as it did for me.
Well, I got some reading to do. This has been an immensely beneficial thread. Thank you all!

The Presidential Candidate who begins the battle has lost both times (Romney in 2012, Clinton in 2016)

Something to look out for when Biden v Trump drops.
Also, technically, the person to get slapped first by Lincoln at the end has won both times, but that's kinda cheating since Trump got slapped twice in 2016.
