 | Hello everyone, submitted by PUMK1ng to Daytrading [link] [comments] It's been a while since I posted anything on Reddit for this community, so today I would like to share an intraday strategy I use myself. Let's get straight to it. Strategy Basics - Name - 5 EMA Shorting Strategy Timeframe used - 5 Minute Indicators used - Exponential Moving Average (EMA) 5 Period. Accuracy - 60-65% How to trade the 5 EMA Strategy? Step 1 - Look for Stocks/Forex pairs with good volumes. Step 2 - Set a 5-period exponential moving average on the chart with your time frame being 5 minutes. Step 3 - Look for a candle that is forming that has a low above the 5 EMA, wait for the candle to close. Step 4 - If the next candle crosses the low of the previous candle which had its low above 5 EMA then initiate a short entry with stop loss above the previous candle's high and a target of at least 1:3 Risk to reward ratio. Example of Entries - Chart of Block Inc on 5 Minutes timeframe Entries on GBPJPY 5 Minute timeframe In the above example, you can clearly figure out how the entries were taken. Everything said above seems pretty easy to do, so here comes the hard part about how to find the stocks/Forex Pairs which are currently forming a candle above the 5 EMA. The simple solution is to use a screener, I personally use the TradingView screener but you need a pro account to access it, I don't know if there are any alternatives you can use, but if you do find anything then here is the only filter I put on while screening the stocks/forex pairs. Filter - EMA Below the last low. Risk Management - The strategy I mentioned above is still in its crude form, to reduce your risk and improve the win rate you can do the following things.
Why does this strategy work - The price of any asset tends to closely follow the 5 EMA, the price tends to stick to the 5 EMA as it moves, and thus anytime when a stock is in a downtrend but the price moves away and above the 5 EMA, it has a tendency to retrace back to the 5 EMA line, we being daytraders get an opportunity there to capture some ticks/pips. Why should we have a 1:3 Risk to reward ratio? The strategy works pretty well on somedays especially when the overall market is bearish, but still, it has a win rate of only 60-65%, thus having a risk to reward ratio of 1:3 gives you a margin to commit errors, also given that you can trail your stop loss and have a chance of achieving higher risk to reward ratios make this strategy one of my favorites. Suppose you are taking 5 trades a day with this strategy, and per trade, you have a risk capacity of $100. Then, as per the stats, you will have 3 wins and 2 losses. Thus, 2 Losses give you a $200 loss but then 3 wins give you a $900 profit. Thus net profit becomes +$700. Also, you should trail your stop losses as much as possible. One method of trailing would be to put your stop loss on your entry price once the price achieves a 1:1 RR ratio, subsequently, when the price reaches your target you can put your stop loss on 2.5 RR ratio Priceline and let the trade run while trailing the stop loss by 1 Risk unit per 1 risk unit achieved on the downside until the price hits your trailing stop loss.
