For some context: I came from a 2017 Subaru BRZ.
The positives of the Supra:

The car had a ton of grip in twisty mountain roads and touges. More than my BRZ did with 245 PS4S tires.
The short wheelbase really made the car playful and it loved to turn.
The engine is a work of art. The way it builds revs, the smooth delivery of power and lack of turbo lag. It sounded so good as well after the fake engine noises were removed. It had a ton of power whenever you needed it.
The transmission was basically perfect for what it is.
It looked amazing, tons of attention but this got old fast.
Fuel economy is excellent for its class.
The paint is quite nice quality.

The Negatives of the Supra:

The steering. This is the biggest let down of the car especially coming from a BRZ. The steering was completely vague, after multiple alignments it never felt right. Once it loaded up during turns it felt somewhat decent but still. Super mushy, even for a daily grocery getter. If you turned it to sport mode, It was just vague, had lack of feedback but now it was heavier for no reason.
The steering wheel. Thin rimmed, which is nice, but the wheel looks and feels like it came out of an X3 and it probably did. I could never confidently have a good grip on the wheel. My fingers never felt like they were in the right place. The leather on the wheel felt cheap as well, it was hard.
The rattles. Why does this car rattle so much. My 4 year old BRZ did not rattle as much as this brand new Supra did. The interior quality was honestly a bit of a let down. The switchgear felt nice but there were a lot of cheap plastics used that rattle. For example the plastics around the HVAC controls. I’m serious when I say the BRZ felt like a truly quality product when I first bought it, but I had build quality issues from day 1 with the Supra. The rattles were so bad I ended up taking the interior apart to insert foam everywhere. This helped quieten the rattles by 50%.
Floatiness The front end of the car felt floaty on the highway going over 80 kph. It just never felt confident and planted on the highway. I tired different alignment settings.
Oil consumption. It needed a quart of oil every 2500-3500km. This has affected many of the 2021+ cars with the new engine design.
The lack of an oil dipstick is infuriating. Especially when the car burns oil. It warned me it needs another 1L of oil to be added in. The dealership then drained the car and measured the oil and it was only down 250ml not 1L.
The car felt twitchy near the limit when I took it to twisty roads. This is with multiple alignment attempts and various settings. But it added to the character of the car.
The visibility is rather poor. The front visibility is fine, and the blind spots are an easy fix with some convex mirror add ons but honestly I always felt like I was in this tight dark cave. My ND Miata feels roomier. I don’t know if its because its physically roomier inside which is entirely possible because the Supra is tight and I am only 5’7 or its because you’re surrounded by a greenhouse of windows compared to the Supra. It was hard to see the traffic lights above sometimes as well. There were a few times I almost ran into pedestrians doing left turns because the A pillar is so massive and forward in your vision. I’ve never had this issue before. The BRZ and Miata have excellent visibility.
Ergonomics: I hit my head multiple times trying to get into the car because the door is a tiny hole and the top of the window is so low. I don’t understand why they designed the car this way. My elbow would also be inside the cupholders when I rested my hand or used the shift lever. Or they would bump up against my sunglasses or drink inside the cupholders. There is no way to skip track or fast forward on the steering wheel, and the buttons for this are on the passenger side of the stereo system and it is quite the reach. You also cannot couple the left and passenger side climate temperatures. It's always dual zone. This is annoying because you have to adjust both separately at all times.
No boost gauge, no oil temperature gauge. Really no sports car gauges at all except the one that tells you how much horsepower you're using which is practically useless
The seats are not comfortable. They feel rather hard, and you’re sitting on TOP of them not in them. The standard Miata cloth seats are more comfortable and I feel like they hold me in better. The BRZ had the best seats.
The headlights are not as bright as my BRZ’s standard LED head lights.
The windshield wipers made erratic movements sometimes at the end of each wipe cycle.
No Android Auto
The HUD does not have a rev counter, or shift light.
The gauge cluster is all LCD but you cannot customize it. Most of it is just blank 90% of the time.
The speakers I might just be insane, but the MX5’s Bose system sounds better than the JBL system in the Supra.
But ultimately, this car was just boring to drive. It was fast, but the combination of the poor steering feel, automatic transmission that shifted smoothly and flawlessly, and poor visibility made the car boring and a bit of a drag as a daily. It was basically like driving a standard 4 series but more cave like, less convenient and harder to get in and out of. The only time It was really truly fun was when I took it on a twisty mountain road at 130KPH+ and the steering could load up nicely. The BRZ was, in my use case, more fun than the Supra, and more practical. The only thing that let the BRZ down was its engine. Not just the lack of power or torque dip but the character of the engine was not sporty.

I’ve reflected on this car for a long time in the context of Toyota as a company and the BRZ/86. I remember Tetsuya san talking about the great lengths they went into making sure the driving position of the 86 was right, the steering wheel was right, how the steering rack had to be redesigned for a lower center of gravity. They set out to make a great driver’s car and that’s what you felt when you drove it. You truly felt like this was a purpose built car. This same ethos did not carry forward to the Supra. The driving position is a mess, the seats are a mess, the steering wheel is a joke, the hood bulges too much and blocks visibility of the road, the A pillars are in the way, its hard to get in and out of. They had a digital gauge cluster but never bothered to add any customization ability or make better use of it. They had a HUD, but missed another opportunity to add a rev counter and shift light. Zero effort. Not even a GR logo inside the car. The Infotainment screen isn’t angled correctly towards the driver and its dim. The wind buffeting issue is still not fixed. I get that it’s a cheap aftermarket solution to fix it and I did fix it, but I think it symbolizes Toyota’s attitude with this car. It just does not feel like they put in the effort that they did with the GR Yaris, and the GR86/BRZ. Maybe the BMW partnership limited them significantly. This feels more like a rushed product even more than the Quadrifoglios I’ve test driven.
The MX5 on the other hand, you can just tell the engineers put love into it and its a car with a solid purpose. Its nimble, agile, the engine loves to be revved, the interior doesn't rattle like the Supra did. The steering feels glorious and it just feels like a better, well designed, more complete package. And I learned a lot about myself after this ownership. I learned that I enjoy really revving a car out and feeling like i'm going fast even though I might not be vs a car that feels like you're going slow but you're actually going fast and cannot use more than 25% of the car on a daily basis.
