Beginner's Guide to Trading Crypto. Part 5

Talk The Trader Talk: A Journey Into The Realm Of Trader Slang

Slang is a natural evolution of a language under working conditions. Every industry has its own slang vocabulary, which may or may not be composed of morphologies of words directly related to the job. Sometimes situations related to the job may evolve or devolve into adjectives, verbs, nouns of even completely new words that reflect the object in question. To the uninitiated, such terms may sound like gibberish and could well resemble the talk of thugs that has been so vividly presented many times over in television series and movies.
Whether it is pidgin, slang, argot, or a dialect, industries have their own ways of expressing their ins and outs. For instance, the exhaust system of automobiles is often called the "puffer" among mechanics, a "fat finger" is a larger than intended trade among bankers, a "gat" is a weapon among street gangs, and "all day" is a life sentence among prisoners. The lists of slang terms are endless and are an extremely interesting read.

The Trader Lingo

To make sure that MoonTrader users get into the feel of what it is like to be part of the crypto market, we have compiled a comprehensive summary of some of the most widespread slang terms used by traders. Knowing these terms is an important part of working on an exchange, as understanding what traders are talking about is half the job of becoming one of them and being able to delve into the processes taking place. To talk the talk and walk the walk, traders must understand each other and, most importantly, shorten their speech into a mixture of phrases comprehensible only for the initiated and mystical to outsiders.
Babysitting: A slang term used by traders all over the world from Wall Street to the most obscure exchanges in Africa. The term means holding a trade that has been losing out for a while in hopes that it will gain in price, usually in vain. For example: “You’ve been babysitting that option for way too long, it’s a hopeless cause.”
Crunching: A situation in which a stock’s or asset’s price starts falling rapidly and has no support levels. For example: “The XXX stock is going down the drain. It’s crunching, leave it!”
Jig Out: This is a situation when the market makes a sudden turn for the worse and an investor or trader loses out as a result. For example: “The YYY stock jigged out on me today. Lost half a mil.”
Learning Curve: A fairy common expression meaning the amount of time and effort someone, such as a budding new trader, has to put into something to master the art and “learn the ropes”. For example: “The learning curve for Forex is pretty steep.”
Melt: Another fairly common expression that can be encountered in the world of finance, which signifies that a lot of money has been lost and an account has been depleted. For example: “My account melted through today after the market jigged me out on that nut.”
Nut: While nuts may be tasty as a snack or very useful for keeping things bound together with bolts, in trading a nut is the total amount of commissions that have to be paid for a certain trade. For example: “The nut on ZZZ is crazy these days.”
Permabull / Permabear: Since bullish markets are positive and bearish markets are sleepy, the traders working on such a market are called bulls or bears. There are some optimists who believe that such markets are always there. These traders are called permabulls. The opposite are permabears. For example: “Even if the market is dead and floating, he will still act like a permabull”.

Printing on the “O”: If we consider that O is an extreme abbreviation of the term “Override”, then the phrase means that the price of an asset is below the bid price and there is an urgent need to sell it. “XYZ is printing on the Os all day!”
ScalpeScalping: The idea of scalping is opening hundreds and thousands of small trades in a short amount of time in hopes of generating a large amount of small profits. Scalpers are traders who engage in scalping. For example: “He’s a heck of a scalper.”
Slippage: A common situation for inexperienced traders who lose on assets that are insoluble and cause losses due to higher or lower prices. For example: “He’s been slipping on ZZZ for three weeks in a row.”
Squiggly Lines: Technical analysis consists of graphs and indicators that traders use to make sense of market dynamics. The lines on graphs are never straight, which would mean that the market is comatose, thus they are called squiggly, or uneven lines. For example: “I’ve been staring at the squiggly lines all day and my eyes are popping out.”
Tank: A tank is not only a military machine or a container, but also a verb, which could either mean to fill something up, like a container or a stomach, and also a drop. In this case, tanking means a market collapse. For example: “The market’s tanking! All is lost! All is lost!”
Unicorn, Vulture, Whale: The trading terminology bestiary is full of terms that have gained animalistic form. A unicorn is a situation reminiscent of the mythical beast, when a startup has reached a $1 billion valuation. A vulture is a trader who preys on falling assets and buys them up in hopes that they will rise in the future. A whale is a holder of a large amount of capital or an asset.

Stick: The US dollar has a lot of synonyms from bucks and dough to aces and greenbacks. The stick is another synonym for the US currency used in trading. For example: “Made a K load of sticks today trading XYZ.”
Whack: A fairy straightforward term meaning that a trader has lost a fair amount of money. For example: “I got whacked trading ZZZ the other day.”
Bottom Fishing: There are traders and there are speculators. When a market has “tanked”, assets usually cost much lower and a certain breed of traders emerges who start buying up assets that have lost in value in hopes of selling them off at higher prices later. Such actions are called bottom fishing, or scooping up assets that have floated to the surface of a market like dead fish after a bomb goes off underwater. For example: “The market has sunk today and the sharks are bottom fishing.”
Choppiness: The market is never a calm place and its trials and tribulations are often compared to storms and waves. Since waves can be choppy, or rough in terms of the height of their crests, it is fair to compare market volatility to wavy seas. For example: “The choppiness of the market is not allowing institutional investors to enter with their capital.”
Dark Pools: There is always liquidity on the market that is hid away from average traders. Such liquidity is called a dark pool, which is usually in the hands of special groups. In essence, these are trading volumes created by orders placed by institutional investors. For example: “The dark pools are buying up Bitcoins real quick.”
Dead Cat Bounce or Rubber Band Effect: Since markets are unpredictable, it is often possible for markets to suddenly rebound after seeming dead for a long time. Such a situation is called a dead cat bounce, or a rubber band effect, which is quite figurative in itself. For example: “The market is preparing for a possible dead cat bounce after the recent wave of news.”
Hodl: A bastardization of the term Hold, misspelled by a drunk BitcoinTalk user, which simply means holding an asset in hopes that it will rise in price. For example: “Hodl Bitcoin! Hodl it!”
Short squeeze: There are situations when an asset suddenly rises in price and forces traders to close their positions. For example: “The holders were forced to short squeeze after the price of ZZZ suddenly spiked”.
Resistance Zone: In technical analysis, this is the area between the current support and resistance areas. Prices usually start resisting other prices in such areas and may start falling. For example: “The resistance area of $120 has been reached for ZZZ and we can expect a decline to areas of $100.”

Fallen Angel: Assets that may have reached price heaven are not guaranteed to stay there and it often happens that a highly valued asset has suddenly lost in price. Usually, this biblical analogy refers to high yielding bonds that once had investment grades. For example: “ZZZ has turned into a fallen angel after the US introduced sanctions against country YYY.”
Fat Tail: In statistics, such cases are called outliers and signify that a value has moved away from the mean and has gained a high degree of riskiness. For example: “ZZZ is showing fat tails and will soon reach non-investment levels.”
Flavor: Given the abundance of types of orders and assets on the market, traders often do not distinguish between them and simply call them different flavors. For example: “How about some ZZZ flavor?”
Hit The Bid: A rather straightforward expression meaning that someone has decided to sell an asset. For example: “The price just hit the low, so go and hit the bid”.
Odd Lot: A lot is usually considered to be a million dollars. An odd lot is anything under a million dollars. For example: “I sold that odd lot of ZZZ yesterday.”
Smoke And Mirrors: The poetic expression has made its way onto the market and means that a corporate entity is distorting the market image in hopes of attaining its own goals, usually to make an asset seem more attractive. For example: “The market is all smoke and mirrors after ZZZ flushed its stocks on.”
The list of trading slang terms is endless in its variety and the only way to fully immerse one’s self into it is trading actively and gaining experience. Years of work on any market in any industry will eventually saturate a participant’s mind with the necessary skills and terminology turn any greenhorn into a pro.

Cryptocurrency markets challenges and solutions

This has been bugging me for a while so thank you for endulging my rambling. TL;DR at the end.
I'd like for everyone to just think about what we're trying to do here. Don't forget what the ultimate goal is. Anyone remember? Is it to make a profit? No, that's a secondary goal. The primary goal is to develop widespread adoption of cryptocurrency as an alternative to fiat currency. Anyone remember this lofty goal or did we all forget this while chasing 30% daily price swings. We're trying to complete with USD, GBP, EUR, and CNY, remember?
This is EUR vs. USD. You'll note that this is all data (or click on "All" button on the bottom), going back to 1993 through today. What do you notice? You'll notice an open of $1.22 to €1. After a few months, it fell about 10%, then rose up 24% over the next two years only to drop about 40% over seven years and then almost doubling over eight years only to drop about a third in the last ten years to where it is today - almost where we were 25 years ago (approximately).
This is BTC vs. USD. You'll note that this is all data going back to 2011. During the last seven years it has... oh my God are you kidding me?! This is LTC vs. USD.
Let's not forget what we're talking about. We're talking about currency. For currency to be used, it needs to be relatively stable. Now compare the charts above. Let's say we created a new country called Cryptonia. Which of these would you like to use as currency? EUR? BTC? LTC? My money is on EUR. Why? Because it's relatively stable.
Now let's fast forward a bit and pretend that Cryptonia has adopted Litecoin as its official currency. Our largest trading partner is the US. How would transactions between merchants work in this scenario, taking into account the last few days. I'll use the following prices:
Let's run through a transaction:
1/16
1/17
1/18:
Conclusion:
This works both ways as far as you can do the math in USD vs. LTC to see how this screws over at least one party due to the wild price swings. Note: fiat currency does the same thing with one key difference explained later on.
Don't forget that this is all within 3 days. Now sure, obviously the last few days isn't something that happens every day ... but doesn't it? Look at the examples of EUR:USD. Any sharp spikes or drops have taken months to execute - enough time for relative prices to adjust. Look at cryptocurrency prices - the swings (from a percentage basis) are wild on a regular basis. In short, cryptocurrency isn't acting like currency. It's acting like an asset and not just an asset but a highly speculative one. The IRS is right to treat it like an asset because if it looks like an asset, and it acts like an asset, then it is an asset.
Where do I believe this should go? I believe cryptocurrency market needs to mature. I believe these drastic price swings need to stop. When will this happen? I believe it'll happen when the cryptocurrency market reaches a happy plateau where the market cap has reached a point where the buyers and sellers mostly eliminate one another and the relatively large price swings - from a percent point of view - are as boring as Mr. Stein. EUR vs. USD went up 0.03% today. 0.03%. In LTC-speek, that's going up $0.58 for the whole day. Oh and it was a wild ride too. Why it went all the way down to $1.21697 and all the way up to 1.22645. I know, I know - tie me down because I'm out of control.
Is this the only problem? No. Cryptocurrency has another problem and that's the sheer number of types of coins available. How many coins are available? 1,448. Nearly 1,500 coins all competing with each other for market share. We have Bitcoin at about $200b all the way to something like Digital Money Bits (DMB, an appropriate acronym). What is it? Who cares, it's worth $3,832. Not $3.832 billion or million but literally $3,832 with a volume of $35,509 today and hey, just this June, its market cap reached an all time high of $62,000! You missed the recent run-up though and boy did you miss it. On January 1st, its market cap was worth almost five hundred dollars! Yep, about two Litecoins! But look at it now - it went from $500 market cap to $3,832 in less than three weeks. Clearly this one is shooting to the moon.
This is a problem. Decentralization has an unfortunate side effect of - duh - nobody being in charge. There's no real clearance for these and some people with a little bit of money can literally copy and paste a whitepaper and have this chart and have a serious valuation of almost $17b from $140 million in literally 30 days. This doesn't act like a currency either. This is a problem.
Don't forget, this isn't like the dot-com era. We're not launching IPO's and .com companies that have different ideas. Amazon isn't like Ebay, or Google, or Yahoo, or Facebook or anything else. They all have different ideas for different segments of the population. We are in the cryptocurrency market. The world today has 180 fiat currencies. Cryptocurrency market is approaching 1,500. We need to trim the fat and the outright forgeries. Market cap isn't enough to weed them out. There needs to be something, a stabilizing force, that should act as a clearinghouse for launch of new cryptocurrencies. The market has failed to destroy shitcoins. Heck, it rewarded them based on lies, paid endorsements, FOMO, and FUD for other coins. This doesn't help the cryptocurrency market. It helps a few people get really wealthy really quickly and you are left holding the bag, so to speak. Should coins only be allowed to be introduced when its network reaches a certain hash rate? Isn't that the only objective point of value we have - number of mathematical calculations and power used in those calculations? You can't fake that.
What's another problem with cryptocurrency? It's what it represents. The governments don't see crypto as a positive force. After all, it directly competes with their own currencies. Can the governments shut this down? No - this is the Internet, after all. But they can kill it in other ways. I don't know how many people here remember but my first brush with Bitcoin was the ransomware viruses which wanted $300 in Bitcoin to unlock files. Bitcoin was seen as something tied to illegal activities. If governments - and let's say the US, South Korea, and China in particular - ban Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in particular then what they'll really do is make transactions illegal. What's the on-ramp and off-ramp to/from crypto? The banks which are already regulated. Now let's say you're in the US, your bank account is tied to your Coinbase account and you have some cryptocurrency. US issues a regulation which states that trading cryptocurrency is now illegal. It issues orders to all US banks to shut down related accounts. The following things will happen: cryptocurrency prices will tank and everyone is going to scramble taking money out which would likely overload the system, causing massive delays.
But let's say you're left holding your crypto and it's been a month. What can you do with it? Not much. Crypto isn't accepted in enough places yet. You can continue holding, hoping the price and ability to extract will come back one day. After all, you can't get your money back. Your bank closed your related account. You can open another one at any new bank but they'll either ban you from connecting your account to Coinbase or they'll confiscate any money coming from Coinbase and charge you with a crime. Now have the governments banned crypto? No - you can use and trade crypto all you want since it can't be traced. But have they effectively? Yes. Ironically, it's the banks that'll save us and I think that's why Ripple blew up. After all, if you have a cryptocurrency that sucks the bank's [censored] and plays along, you can get:
I think that's why something like Ripple blew up - because it doesn't care much about regular people, it wants to be the speedy highway for bank<->bank transfers.
What's a solution to this problem? More regulation and playing nice with the governments. Crypto isn't going mainstream if you shut out all governments. It needs to be connected. This means working with regulators to make sure that KYC laws are followed, that people report and pay money on any gains, and that - to a point - there's some supervision and tracing of transactions in a way that if you're robbed, you can get your money back. This will create a new job field, which - considering our current growth - will create a whole slew of high-paying white-collar jobs. Considering the high-level of transactions, banks would start this, followed by private companies, governments, and law-enforcement agencies. A good way to start this is what CBOE and CME have started to do - legitimize the currency. This is a foot in the door to the real holy grail: FOREX markets. When it's legitimized and not in serious competition with governments, it'll be embraced and its availability - along with instant transfers and low fees - will be widely supported by serious platforms.
Until these problems are fixed, the cryptocurrency market will remain what it is today: a speculative asset and not a currency. During the time it's taken me to write this post, Litecoin has gone up 2.6%. Euro remains at 0.03% gain.
Thanks for reading!

Answered: Your Most Burning Questions About A modern day forex strategy

There are tons of reasons but I'd like to talk about two that I think cover a lot of ground.
Most traders seem to be very short term "swing" or intra-day traders looking to pick up a few pips and move on. What makes this do difficult is that trying to accurately predict the little 20-30 pip blips and bleeps over and over again on a consistent basis with a long term profit is something I consider to be nearly impossible for the vast majority of traders to do. You'll have some winning and losing streaks but, overall, if you manage to even keep your head barely above water you're probably way ahead of the game.
Most of these very short term traders rely on the technical indicators to set up their trades. Many have "backtested" a system, but I think backtesting is a huge waste of time. To really test a system you need to back your charts up as far as they'll go then slowly move things forward, entering and exiting trades as you go. And if you really want to have a good test, start with $100 and burn it if you lose it. Now do some more testing the same way.
Most trading "systems' are variations of MA crossover systems. Trade "when the little hand is on the 2 and the big hand is on the...". Yes in a long term trend they look OK, but see the above then tell me if they really work. They can't tell you when profits are maxed and they can't keep you out of choppy markets, which is when you'll be giving back all the profits made when you were lucky enough to catch a trend.
Very few traders are long term and there are some very good reasons why. Longer term trading requires a very good knowledge of fundamentals and economics. It takes time to digest all this and most traders probably find it very boring and difficult to follow but, what really makes this type of trading so difficult is that in order to stay in these trades you'll need to be able to ride out the inevitable ups and downs that occur as a trend progresses. There's much less "action" here because longer term trends don't get set up every day (or even every week). These kinds of trades don't appeal to the gamblers.
All this being said, I really believe the long term trader has a much better chance of being profitable. I'll explain this by setting up a few bets on the NY Yankees.
Everyone knows the Yankees are a very good team. Does that mean they'll win the world series every year? No, but here's my long term bet:
I'm gonna bet that the Yankees are gonna win more games then they'll lose this year. That's it. I only have one bet the whole season. Boring, really. What's worse is that they've lost 7 out of their last 8 and they're below .500 for the year so far. I'm losing pips and I gotta stay in and ride it out. Not easy.
Here's the Yankee bet that's like trading those short term blips and bleeps:
I'm gonna bet the Yankees score in this inning. Hey, they scored in the 2 previous innings. Alex Rodriguez is coming up, the short term MA of runs scored by the Yankees has crossed over the long term MA of runs given up by the opposing pitcher...
There's a lot more fun in betting this way. You're gonna have 8-9 bets/day for 162 days. Plenty of action, as long as your money holds out.
I guess i'm a boring trader. Hope I didn't bore you too much.
If longer term trading interests you and you want some help with fundamental analysis, I have several other threads that will help. Just do a search.

Using "Insane" Leverage to Outrun BTC Volatlity When Trading Stocks/Bonds/Forex/Commodities

TL;DR ![1BTC levered 1100x thin forex profit chart with 40 drop in BTC prices](http://ultra-coin.com/images/1BTC_levered_1100x_thin_forex_profit_chart_with_40_drop_in_BTC_prices.png)
Even with the price of the underlying BTC dropping almost in half... Net of all transaction, transmission and leverage fees... Even with not the fattest in profits (well, maybe fat for a forex trader)... This trader was able to eek out a 8.1% profit exiting the trade. The ability to leverage "insane" can insulate the winning trade from normally deadly levels of BTC volatility and price fluctuation.
An employee at Veritaseum asked me a very simple, but initially perplexing question last night. He said, "_All other parameters being equal, what's the difference between an order with 10 BTC principal at 1x leverage and 0% collateral, and an order with 1 BTC principal at 10x leverage at 900% collateral?
Well, to answer that question, I want to direct everyone to our trade modeling spreadsheet (which definitely comes in handy when designing more complex trade setups and fleshing out less than obvious ideas). What I did to answer his question was to create the two trades independently using a forex setup. The first trade setup looked like this:
![1BTC levered 9x thin forex profit](http://ultra-coin.com/images/1BTC_levered_9x_thin_forex_profit.png)
The trade looked like this at expiration (remember these are illustrative results, not necessarily or accurately indicative of actual trade results for a whole lot of mumbo jumbo legal reasons):
![10BTC thin forex profit](http://ultra-coin.com/images/10BTC_thin_forex_profit.png)
This what the trade would have resulted in if we used 1BTC as the principal, 9 BTC as collateral and 10x leverage, which would have effectively given you the same amount of purchasing power with the same amount of capital committed.
![1BTC levered 9x thin forex profit chart](http://ultra-coin.com/images/1BTC_levered_9x_thin_forex_profit_chart.png)
This is what would have happened to both trades above if BTC prices were to drop by a whopping 40% before the trade ended, but after the trade began...
![1BTC levered 9x thin forex profit chart with 40 drop in BTC prices](http://ultra-coin.com/images/1BTC_levered_9x_thin_forex_profit_chart_with_40_drop_in_BTC_prices.png)
Yes, that would hurt, and it would hurt a lot! That chart was one of the biggest objections given to me about the new UltraCoin trading system, the need to be exposed to bitcoin volatility in order to trade. But, there's gold at the end of this rainbow. Check out what happens when we drastically ratchet up the leverage to levels insane! At 1,100x leverage, look at what happens to that same 1BTC trade with 9BTC collateral when winning a thin forex profit...
![1BTC levered 1100x thin forex profit chart with 40 drop in BTC prices](http://ultra-coin.com/images/1BTC_levered_1100x_thin_forex_profit_chart_with_40_drop_in_BTC_prices.png)
That's correct!
If you don't believe me, look at the same trade setup, except in all cash with 1,100BTC and no leverage or collateral...
![1100BTC levered 1x thin forex profit chart with 40 drop in BTC prices](http://ultra-coin.com/images/1100BTC_levered_1x_thin_forex_profit_chart_with_40_drop_in_BTC_prices.png)
I don't want anyone to think that insane leverage is a panacea, or even safe, for novice traders - but as you can see it does have its uses. I want to remind everybody that the leverage used is bounded (both on the profit and the loss side) by the principal+collateral posted. These next 4 charts tell the story. Look at the trade setup up wtih a 20% gross gain - levered 1,100% and unlevered (this is explicitly unlevered to illustrate a point, not the same purchasing power being put upfront in cash as modeled in the other examples above).
![1100BTC levered 1x with 20 forex profit chart with no drop in BTC prices](http://ultra-coin.com/images/1100BTC_levered_1x_with_20_forex_profit_chart_with_no_drop_in_BTC_prices.png)
As you can see, we profits are bounded by the capital sent to the blochchain as escrow (you get a maximum of what you and your counterparty have agreed to commit to the transaction - and not necessarily 20% of the face price of the profit x 1,100%). Similarly, your losses are capped in the same fashion.
Just for education's sake, this is the same trade with the entire amount put up as principal and no leverage or collateral.
![1100BTC levered 1x with 20 forex profit chart with no drop in BTC prices real](http://ultra-coin.com/images/1100BTC_levered_1x_with_20_forex_profit_chart_with_no_drop_in_BTC_prices_real.png)
Basically, after fees, you get a little less than 1/4th the return, while having to commit a lot more capital.
These trading concepts should come in handy this year when we tackle things such asthe Danish National Bank (their central bank) telling us things that Reggie just doesn't believe are sustainable. Feel free to reach to me personally if you have any questions.

High risk investment advice for people with nothing to lose.

One of my hobbies is high risk investing. A better name for my personal investment strategy might be apocalyptic investing. I've had it happen twice now that a company I was dealing with collapsed the day after they sent me my money.
-I'm not going to tell you what to invest in, because that's not really that interesting and as with any investment, as I could be horribly wrong. I would rather tell you what stupid mistakes to avoid. I will however tell you my rationale behind my own personal decisions.
-Mainstream analysts are too optimistic. The conspiracy/very angry and disenfranchised/doomsday crowd tends to be too pessimistic and too optimistic about their own solutions. The golden mean lies somewhere in between. What you need to look for are valid holes that the very angry crowd manages to poke in mainstream projections for the future, as these are predictions that the market generally hasn't filtered out yet. Example, Paul Ehrlich had a valid point when commenting on the fact that we are running out of resources. His predictions were however simply about twenty years off. His own bias caused him to prematurely announce the end of the world.
What this means for me in practice is that I seek to invest in fat tails, that is, extreme outcomes that are perceived as unlikely but whose effects are extreme. As humans we fail to anticipate extremely disrupting events, we have a bias in favor of business as usual. When we do see an extremely disrupting event on the horizon, we tend to look for excuses to deny the threat in front of us. This is especially true for the majority of large actors on the market, people who are invested in the status quo and expect solid yearly returns, when a market is predominantly composed of such people, inefficiencies show up, especially as pessimistic people generally don't have the amount of wealth to fix such inefficiencies in the market.
Mark Spitznagel pioneered this approach to investment. It's a form of investing where radical environmentalism, libertarianism and paranoia intersect (kind of like this username I guess). It's not a very popular style of investing, as it only appeals to people who should probably be on Prozac for their own good. By staying obscure it manages to stay profitable, which brings us to the first point:
-The wise man does at once what the fool does finally. This is true for most investments. When everyone's talking about it it's time to get out.
-Daytrading Forex is gambling, and gambling is a tax on idiots. Not going to waste anymore words on that.
-If something is heavily promoted it's because those doing the promoting profit from it, not you. Example, Forex. Why do you see ads everywhere telling people to trade daily price moves on USD/JPY or USD/EUR etcetera? Because that's how brokers make money. Many people making many trades daily allows them to charge for every single trade. It's a massive scam and I would really urge everyone to stay out of it.
-Most technical analysis is bunk, avoid it. The irony is that the technical analysis that isn't bunk becomes bunk, because the market will correct itself for it. Such daily inefficiencies are mostly fixed by high frequency trading algorithms and experts at professional banks.
-The efficient market hypothesis is bunk too. Market inefficiencies do happen. The efficient market hypothesis is not consensus among economists at all and especially since the start of the great never-ending recession it has come under attack, as governments had too much faith in the market as a self-regulating complex system. Companies pursue never-ending growth of their activities, bet on their success in pursuing such never-ending growth and when they turn out to be wrong hope to be bailed out.
-Efficient market hypothesis proponents believe that sticking your money in an index fund is practically always the best decision. Problem being that was true in most of the past, but it has also been awfully wrong at times. There have been plenty of times where you had to wait twenty years or more to see your money back. In the current situation, sticking your money in the SP 500 seems a very poor decision. Mark Spitznagel tells people that the best decision regular folks can make now is to simply step out of the market and I think he's right.
