This is done to limit losses in case the market moves against the trader. There are a few things to consider when placing a stop-loss order. First, you need to decide where to place your stop loss. A good rule of thumb is to place your stop loss at a level that is below a recent low if you are long a currency pair, or above a recent high if you are short a currency pair. Second, you need to decide how much risk you are willing to take. Your stop loss should be placed at a level that you are comfortable with, but remember that the larger the stop loss, the greater the chance that your position will be closed out prematurely. Third, you need to decide what your profit target is. Once your position hits your profit target, you can close out your position and take your profits. Stop loss orders can be a useful tool in forex trading. https://supermarketfx.com/what-is-a-stop-loss-order-and-how-do-i-use-one-in-forex-trading |

![]() | Grid TradingIn this article we are going to discuss a trading strategy called grid trading, whose name comes from the appearance of the charts of the traders who use it.Those who use this system state that its principles are completely opposed to what is normally taught about money management and market operations in general, however they also affirm that it works and that if it is used in an appropriate way it can generate profits in a profitable way. However, others say that it is nothing more than a siren's song and that it only ends up causing losses. Next we are going to present the principles of Grid Trading in such a way that you form your own opinion. What is Grid Trading? We can define Grid Trading as a famous trading strategy that allows the operator to enter the market regardless of the movement it has. As mentioned at the beginning, the philosophy behind this system goes against the accepted principles of most money management and trading in general. In this case, profit is made when once a buy order is executed, for example, the price moves to the next higher band where a sell or even another buy order is executed. As we will see later, it is a system that requires discipline, patience and capital on the part of the trader. Those who operate regularly based on Grid Trading, Likewise, it can be used to operate 24 hours a day or stop trading at any time, it is also possible to withdraw the capital at the desired time. This system that consists of drawing a series of horizontal lines on a price chart in such a way that there is always the same distance between a level and those that are next to it. Each line drawn corresponds to a price and in all of them a purchase order and a sale order are placed, which have a take profit (Take Profit) that is equal to the separation between the levels. In no case are stop-type orders associated. All these drawn lines give the graph a grid appearance from which they take their name, as shown below: Chart with Grid Trading applied The Grid is defined by a series of variables that provide a huge variety of possibilities when using it as a trading system since we can configure them with an infinite number of values. Depending on these parameters, systems based on Grid Trading can be very different from each other and even opposite. In this article we are going to focus mainly on the “Classic” version to call it something, which does not use Stop Loss, where the levels are equidistant from each other and fixed and the Take Profit associated with each operation is equal to the distance in points that exist between the different levels. Over time, a Classic Grid accumulates latent losses in the trader's account, while at the same time the balance grows linearly. Therefore, the profitability of the Grid depends entirely on the number of times the asset price crosses the various levels. In this way, if we have a grid with a defined width and density of levels, there is a minimum number of level crossings that need to occur continuously (without the price escaping its limits), from which the system produces benefits, since the total sum of profits exceeds the sum of latent losses that accumulate How do grids work?To understand how grids work, we are going to give an example. First imagine that you have a candlestick chart on the EUUSD pair on a 30-minute time frame which spans several days, including the weekend, which was included so that we can later study the effect of roll overs. Now we place the lines of the grid every 30 pips, separating the lines of type Bid and those of Ask type by means of the spread, which for the purposes of the graph we can assume constant and about 2 pips. In this way, when we open two trades at the same point, the buy trade opens at the Ask and the sell trade at the Bid. When we close the positions, the purchase position is done at the Bid level and the sale position is at the corresponding Ask level. We must take this into account when making the calculations, since every winning trade that is closed at the next level will have a profit of 28 pips, which corresponds to the 30 pips of distance between the different levels minus the 2 pips of the spread. The positions that remain open contribute what is known as a latent loss that is calculated by adding the distance between the levels and the spread that is paid in each operation. For example, a losing trade that closed 1 level away accumulates an underlying loss of 32 pips. If the distance to the entry price is two levels, the accumulated loss is 64 pips. The different variables of a GridGrids can have an infinite variety of variables for their configuration, however, regardless of their complexity, all of them are characterized by having a few variables that are used to define their main structure and which we will mention below:-The range: It is the distance in pips between two contiguous lines of the Grid. It is one of the main variables and the final performance that the Grid can provide to the trader depends on it. If lines with a lot of separation are used, a little active Grid will be produced, which will be more exposed to rollovers and, above all, will be exposed to long-term trends, since they will not be able to take advantage of reversals in trends in such a way that compensate for the losses produced by the breaks of new levels. On the contrary, very close levels create a much more active Grid, which takes good advantage of constant trend changes and market noise, although they are more complex when it comes to replenishing orders and solving various problems inherent to operations such as They are the requotes, loss of connection, gaps, stops and others. Likewise, they are susceptible to being affected by short-term trends. For example, a session that presents a strong intraday trend can cause high losses in a very dense Grid, without being able to take advantage of the normal corrections that usually occur in any trend of this type. The range between the lines of the Grid must be adjusted according to the volatility of the market, the instrument with which we operate and its complexity. Generally, the range is usually fixed, although it can be made variable. Generally, the range is usually fixed, although it can be made variable. -Take Profit for open trades: Normally the take profit of each position is equal to the distance between the adjacent levels of the Grid minus the spread charged for each trade. Depending on the broker, in a market like Forex, the spreads are usually fixed and constant, although depending on the conditions, they can sometimes vary. In other markets, the spread varies constantly, which is why slippage occurs that will complicate operations with a Grid system. -Stop Loss for open trades: This variable allows you to control the level of loss that can be assumed for each open position. In traditional Grids, it is operated without associated Stop Loss. However, this does not mean that the Grid does not have a general stop, in fact, every Grid must have a general stop that serves as protection against excessive losses that the trader cannot assume. This stop is responsible for closing all positions if it reaches a set price level. -General Stop Loss of the Grid: It is a very important parameter that allows us to establish the amount of capital of our account that we are willing to lose if we operate with an Open or classic Grid. The most advisable thing is to configure it according to the principles of money management and apply it to any Grid that we use in such a way that a margin call is not suffered. Never forget that Grid Trading is a high risk system and assuming otherwise can be dangerous. -Grid Size: This parameter is determined by the maximum number of lines that the Grid can open and determines the level of risk that the trader assumes with this trading system. -Volume per operation: This variable determines the number of lots or contracts that are opened in each line of the Grid. In the simplest Grids the volume is constant, however in the most complex it is sometimes variable. For this type of system, small lot sizes are recommended, since their correct sizing is essential so that a Grid does not reach the margin call point or the general Stop Loss level of the Grid with only a few open levels. -Take Profit closing the Grid: This very important variable allows determining the accumulated profit from which the Grid should be closed. In fact, the greater or lesser success of a Grid Trading system in the medium and long term depends a lot on the correct configuration of this variable and the general Stop Loss. Main types of GridsThe following is a list of the main types of Grids:
